I received a phone call at work yesterday from a kindly old man who said he had a big story for me: the moment his wife died in a hospital, he looked up at the window and saw the face of Jesus, clear as day, looking in.
“I think the world should see this, to know that Jesus is alive today and cares for us today,” the 89-year-old caller said.
His son, who was with him at the time, raced out to the car and grabbed a camera to capture the miracle image.
There have been other stories over the years of mysterious “images” of Jesus or Mary appearing on a soybean tank and a garage window drawing hundreds or even thousands of pilgrims eager for a glimpse of this religious icon. One guy brought in a wooden footstool with what he claimed was an image of Jesus in the wood’s patterns.
Do you remember the guy who found a “funyun” under his car seat that he said looked just like Mary cradling baby Jesus? He sold it on eBay for around $650, if I remember right.
My elderly caller urged me to drive to Napoleon, Ohio, which is about an hour southwest of Toledo, to see the photos.
“It will definitely be worth your while,” he assured me.
I asked if he could send a pic of the miraculous images by email, but he didn’t know how (not surprising considering he’s 89). But he put a nurse on the line who was able to take a photo of his photos with a cell phone.
The more I learned about this miracle, the less miraculous it sounded. The caller’s wife (it was wife No. 4, by the way) died seven years ago in Texas, and the more time and distance you add to a story, the more it loses its newsworthiness.
And when I finally did gaze upon this image, Jesus wasn’t clear as day to me. Not even clear as dusk.
But you can judge for yourself; the photo is below. Do you see Jesus? Is this a miracle?
